Welcome to our campaign for Bringing Back the Tune Viking ship!

Tuneskipet Drift AS is a non-profit company established in May 2017. Our goal is to build a full-scale archaeological reconstruction of the Tune Viking ship, and offer once-in-a-lifetime Viking Adventure Experiences on the river Glomma in Norway!

The Viking ship will be built in public in Fredrikstad, with original materials, tools and construction methods, under the leadership of boat builder Geir Magne Røvik and Scientist and Archaeologist Knut Paasche. Together they also led the work with the construction of the New Oseberg Ship in Vestfold, Norway.

At the Viking shipyard you will experience an authentic atmosphere with the sound of axes, the smell of wood, food and smoke from the blacksmiths. Boat builders and volunteers dressed in viking clothes will split boards from huge oak logs with copies of Viking tools. You can try your aim at archery, eat Viking food, strike a good bargain at the stalls, and enjoy some incredible days alongside storytellers, craftsmen and the Tune Viking ship.

Oslo: Vikingshipmuseum (Tuneship)

2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the Tune Viking Ship excavation. It was the first Viking ship to be excavated and is still one of the best preserved Viking ships in the world. The ship is part of the norwegian cultural heritage, and safeguarding it recognizes its importance in history. Bringing The Tune Viking Ship back, not only honor the accomplishments of the Vikings, it also inspires our next generation of traditional boat builders.

Scientist and archaeologist Knut Paasche has developed a reconstruction proposal and 3D models of the ship, as well as an app that puts the ship directly into your hands. Teachers will have a dynamic new tool for talking about the ship and to engage students in our project. By programming the GPS coordinates into the app, visitors at the burial site can take a self-guided tour and explore the Tune Viking ship in any angle in 1:1 size with their own mobile phone.

  • Learning more about Viking ships through practical experiments.

  • Good cultural dissemination regionally, nationally and internationally.

  • The finished ship provides a tangible way of touching history.

  • Norway needs a backup for the original, a Tune Viking Ship at sea.

  • Will contribute to new research on Viking ships in general and the Tune Viking ship in particular.

  • Complementing the collection of the world's best-preserved ships from the Viking Age.

  • Experimenting with rigging and sails will provide new knowledge about the Viking voyages.

  • Great potential as a research and teaching object both during construction and operation.

  • A flagship which will highlight the importance of new research and increasing interest in history.

We're offering some fantastic rewards. Backers can receive rewards such as:

Be among the first 1000 to get tickets! You will be invited to sailing/roing tours with the Tune Viking ship at a future unspecificd time and place in Fredrikstad, Norway. We are not responsible for any backer’s travel or costs to participate in the experience. Further, if a cause beyond our control requires rescheduling or cancellation of an experience, we are not responsible for any additional travel or costs a backer may incur in order to participate at the new time. We cannot guarantee that experiences occurring on dates yet to be announced, or that must be rescheduled, will occur on a date that is convenient for all backers.

With the participation of OdinsTreasure backers, here's what we intend to do:

  • Launch our digital platforms with interactive web-viewer and 3D simulations.

  • Finalize our educational program and 3D-app.

  • Build a 1:10 scale model boat and conduct water tank testing to develop final drawings and updated 3D-models.

  • Scientific publication (small version).

  • Establish the Viking Shipyard, and start working on the keel in time for the 150th anniversary of the Tune Viking Ship excavation.

To bring back the Tune Viking ship, we have several stretch goals. For each goal met, we're one giant leap closer to bring back the Tune Viking ship.

We want you to be able to follow our project, so when we reach our first goal, we'll be able to create our digital platforms with interactive web-viewer and 3D simulations.

When we reach this goal, we'll start building a 1:10 scale model boat, and conduct water tank testing to develop final drawings and update all 3D-models.

If we make it to this level, we have suceeded in funding one of the projects most important milestones - to finalize our educational program and digital tools.

If we make it to this level, we'll be able to establish the Viking Shipyard and start working on the keel in time for the 150th anniversary of the Tune Viking Ship excavation.

We believe most people recognizes The Tune Viking Ships importance in history. This campaign's main objective is to kickstart the project. Without the participation of backers and help from volunteers on the Viking Shipyard, we want be able to build the ship.

OdinsTreasure gives a wide audience the chance to be a part of this project. We're inviting you to go behind the scenes and be a part of the process – from fundraising through building to ready ship. All backers will receive regular updates on the process and can follow along each step of the way.

Because we're based in Norway, we have defined our goals and pledge levels in Norwegian krone (NOK). This can get a little bit confusing if you're not up to date on conversion rates, so to make things a little easier for you, we've included the price of things in US Dollars, Euro, and British Pounds in our stretch goals and pledge descriptions. Note that stretch goal amounts have been rounded to the nearest hundred. The converted amounts were all updated right before going live with this campaign, but please note that they may not be accurate at the end of the campaign.

Later, Paasche, in addition to creating and proposing a new reconstruction of the Tune ship, led a research project on a new documentation and reconstruction of the Oseberg ship.

Geir Magne Røvik, Professional Boat Builder. Røvik led the work with the construction of the vikingships Saga Oseberg and Saga Farmand in Vestfold, Norway.

RISKS AND CHALLENGES

No matter the outcome of this project, the original Tune Viking Ship will still be on display on the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. The only risk we have is not meeting our deadline to start building the ship this year. If Bring back the Tune Viking Ship is successfully funded, there is nothing that stands in our way of meeting our goal. Although we do not see any direct risks and challenges, there are always indirect or unseen tasks that may present itself during the process. We hope to run everything as streamlined as possible and also ahead of schedule to make this a great experience for our backers. We have an actionable plan, a realistic timeline, and – most importantly – the in-house expertise to get the job done well.

Project FAQ
